Hosted by the Survey Department, Ministry of Development, Brunei Darussalam, the 85th ASEAN Flag Council Meeting was held in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam on the 21st of September 2023. The meeting event was held in conjunction with the ‘Ukur Tanah Asas Pembangunan (UTAP) 2023’ Seminar at The Centrepoint Hotel, Abdul Razak Complex, on the 20th of September 2023, in collaboration with the Brunei Institution of Geomatics (B.I.G.). The seminar began with a keynote speech by the Honorary President of the ASEAN Federation of Land Surveying and Geomatics (AFLAG), Mr. Gerry Ong, titled ‘Our Profession’s Critical Role Within the Climate Change Space.’
Six other papers were presented in the seminar: ‘Understanding Environmental Change Using Geospatial Techniques,’ ‘Developments in Geospatial Technology: Flood Modeling for Sungai Belait,’ ‘Tectonic Motion of Brunei Darussalam: Analysis from 2011 – 2020,’ ‘Using LiDAR Data in Multipurpose Cadastre Development of Brunei Darussalam,’ ‘Laser Scanner in Action,’ and ‘Future of Land Surveying.’
The 85th ASEAN Flag Council Meeting was also attended by seven Chinese delegates, led by Mr. Wang Wei-guo, the Chairman of the Yunnan Provincial Society of Surveying and Mapping and Geoinformation (YPSSMG). Mr. Wang Wei-guo provided updates on the upcoming 86th AFLAG Council Meeting, which will be held in Kunming, China, in January 2024.
Also discussed fruitfully in the meeting is the ‘Proposed Amendment for The Asean Federation of Land Surveying and Geomatics Constitution’ & 17th South East Asia Survey Congress 2024 (SEASC 24) that will be hosted by the Philippines counsellors.
President Ady Saptadi Ruchiatan and fellow councillors expressed thanks to the hosts and the team for their hospitality, making the meeting and the ‘Ukur Tanah Asas Pembangunan (UTAP) 2023’ Seminar a successful event.
